Chapter 587: Ravenfell's Security
Chapter 587: Ravenfell's Security
In an underground cavern illuminated only by the soft light of the candles hung on the walls, an old man wearing a black robe was sitting cross-legged in the center and practicing mindfulness.
He had a calm expression on his face as his chest slowly heaved up and down. He breathed in and breathed out, the mana particles around him swirling in a mystical manner.
The man was clean-shaven and had a head full of white hair tied into a top knot. A deep scar ran diagonally across his face, starting from the left side of his chin, crossing his nose bridge, and finally ending above his right eye.
Despite the peaceful look on his face, the scar made him appear very daunting, to say the least.
Suddenly, his eyelids twitched and the following moment the visible vortex of mana around his body dissipated.
He slowly opened his eyes and glanced in the direction of the cavern's entrance with his piercing sky-blue eyes. There was a hint of annoyance in them, as well as unconcealed anger. A few moments later, hurried footsteps could be heard coming from the other side of the entrance. Within the next minute, the stone doors slammed open, and a young magus barged inside, his expression full of panic and fear.
"If you don't give me a valid reason for disturbing me, I will kill you right here, right now," said the old man indifferently before the young magus even had the chance to speak.
The young man hurriedly bowed in alarm, "M-My Lord, this message is e-e-extremely urgent!"
"Go ahead, boy," the old man began. "Choose your next words wisely."
The young magus gulped and peeked at the old man sitting in the center of the cavern. He cursed his fortune for having been chosen to deliver the message to this man.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
After all, this man was none other than one of the three leaders of the Umbra Thieves, the Rank 3 - Mana Vortex Magus, Lord Kissinger!
After taking a deep breath, the young magus carefully mulled over his word and relayed the information he had just received from his superiors, "M-My Lord, we've just received word from the brood hive."
He paused for a moment as fear crept into his heart. He didn't know how the old man before him would react to his message. However, he had no other option but to relay it to him.
"The neural parasite inside Alvertos Vyom of the Castor Blood Division has been n-n- neutralized!"
A long moment of silence ensued, causing the young magus to be drenched in cold sweat. Just when he thought of speaking up again, Kissinger's cold voice drifted into his ears.
"I see."
The young magus let loose a breath of relief as he bowed once again and hastily left the room, afraid of staying even a moment longer.
Before closing the door, he cast one final glance at the old man, curious about what his reaction upon finding the death of his own son would be.
But the moment he cast his gaze in Kissinger's direction, he saw a Magic Missile dashing toward him with unmatched speed. Before he even had a moment to react, the spell bore a hole through his head, instantly killing him.
In the center of the cavern, Kissinger slowly lowered his left hand, placing it back on his knee. His shoulders had slouched almost imperceptibly upon hearing the news.
A deep sigh escaped his lips, yet his face remained expressionless.
"Alvertos, you did well."
Out of all his children, he was the most unfamiliar with Alvertos. After all, the latter had spent his entire life being a spy for his greatest enemy, Brigham.
Yet, it was this very child that had brought about the greatest merit in his journey for revenge against the person whom he once called a friend.
Kissinger never understood why Alvertos did so in the first place. He figured this was his son's way of getting recognition from him. Or perhaps it was something else entirely. He didn't know.
But none of it mattered now. He knew that one day Alvertos would meet his end if he was ever caught by the Flynn Family. However, he had been of great use, and that's all that mattered.
His eyes turned cold as he slowly got to his feet, making his way out of the cavern. On the way out, he didn't even glance at the Magus he had just killed in cold blood.
"Since the neural parasite has been killed, Brigham has likely become aware of my existence," he said as his figure was slowly engulfed in darkness.
"The time for patience is over. Now we quicken the tide of destruction."
...
The sharp gothic spires of Ravenfell clawed at the clouds seemingly in defiance of the early morning sun. Ravens could be seen everywhere-some parched atop gargoyle statues, while others nestled in the trees.
These creatures added a mysterious charm to the city. Although their constant cawings could become a source of annoyance for some, especially newcomers.
Walking through the towering western gates of this city, a stout dwarf, wearing a black- furred robe glanced at the countless birds along the city skyline and couldn't help but snort in displeasure.
"I never really did like this shithole," he said.
He then turned to the human standing behind him in a respectful manner and grumbled impatiently, "What's taking him so long?"
Standing behind him was a middle-aged man who seemed to be in his early forties. He had a sun-kissed tan physique and short locks of crimson hair.
It was none other than the Brotherhood's handler for this region, the Rank 2 - Mana Liquefaction Magus, Elrick Spence.
He bowed slightly and respectfully answered, "My Lord, the security at Ravenfell is very strict, especially considering the conflict against the Umbra Thieves came to light a few years ago."
All those years ago, when it was found out that the one behind the assassination attempt on the patriarch of the Flynn Family was the Umbra Thieves, Adam and Elysande had made this knowledge public so as to root out the criminal organization.
A lot of their evil deeds had been brought to light, making it very difficult for this secret organization to operate from the shadows.
Moreover, the city council, comprising seven of the most powerful aristocratic families of Ravenfell, has also taken a stand and joined hands in completely eradicating the presence of
Umbra Thieves.
After all, in their point of view, if this criminal enterprise was brazen enough to go after one of the patriarchs of the seven families, what was stopping it from trying to go after the rest of
them?
"Hmm." The dwarf nodded ever so slightly, turning back around and glancing at the dark and gothic structures of the city.
"And where is Magus Constantine? Why has he not come to greet me yet?" He suddenly asked.
Hearing this question, Elrick's lips twitched. "My Lord, he's still a student at Saratoga. He had informed me beforehand that he'd be busy with classes and that he'd only be able to meet
later today."
"Hmph!" The dwarf harrumphed. "How ill-mannered!"
He then turned around once again and asked with a raised eyebrow, "What about the elven boy from the Ambermind Clan?"
Elrick replied politely, "My Lord, he too is busy with his classes at Saratoga. However, he has prepared a manor for your stay in the city. Everything is already taken care of."
The dwarf hummed in acknowledgment. Right at that moment, another dwarf-this one, much younger-hurriedly approached them from the direction of the city gates. He was holding on to a thick stack of parchment papers and had a relieved look on his face. "My Lord, the identification documents have finally been processed!" He paused for a moment before adding, "They'll have to inform of your arrival to the city council, however." Elrick chimed in, "But rest assured, my lord, that won't be an issue since Daneli has already vouched for you."
"Hmm." The stout dwarf nodded before instructing the man, "Alright, Elrick, lead me to the manor, and there better be good quality meat and ale there."
"As you wish, my lord." Elrick bowed once again before leading the two dwarves deep into the
Uptown Quarter.
Despite the increase in security, the city guards would never bring matters regarding the
arrival of the new Magi into the city to the esteemed members of the city council who already
had so much on their plate.
Not unless the Magus was someone influential or powerful. In this case, the dwarven Magus was a mighty Rank 3 - Mana Vortex Magus!
Although officially he was visiting Ravenfell to meet the young master of the Ambermind Clan of Baja High Forest, his true purpose of coming here was, in fact, to secretly meet with
the patriarch of the Flynn Family. After all, this dwarf was one of the Wardens of the Twilight Brotherhood!
