Their heads were long lumps of white bone; they had no facial features except for the cracks on their faces that acted as mouths, which they used to produce sounds.

They numbered over two hundred and moved about like worms; the sight of them would cause people to feel their skins crawl.

Looking further ahead, Ivan saw the exit from this place at the very end of the opening; he would need to pass through these creatures if he wanted to leave.
